Bike Cos get ready to face Rs 1 lakh car

Ratan Tata’s Dream the Rs 1-lakh car isn’t just making MNC auto majors like Renault rewrite their strategies, India’s two-wheeler majors are also changing there strategies. While some bike makers like Bajaj and Hero Honda have already shown their interest in entering the car market, others are planning to concentrate on performance bikes which, they think, won’t compete with cars.

Suzuki Motorcycles India sales & marketing veep Atul Gupta said, “The cheaper car would impact the entry level two-wheelers. So we would aggressively pursue the totally different 150cc to 200cc performance bike segments in India. Another category identified by us, which won’t be impacted by the Rs 1-lakh car, would be automatic scooters, whose market is consistently growing and many new launches are on the anvil.”

Suzuki’s Japanese compatriot Yamaha Motorcycles shares the same philosophy. “Of late, our strategy in the Indian market has been different. Knowing that mini cars planned by Tata and other players (Bajaj-Renault) would hit hard the commuter bike segment, we have finalised plans to de-risk our business. We want to have good presence in the performance segment, which would not compete with cars as they occupy a different space altogether. While the entry-level cars are meant for commuting, performance bikes are for lifestyle and thrill,” a senior Yamaha official said.

Yamaha, despite being a top two-wheeler player globally with over 25% market share has failed to charm Indian bike lovers so far and is re-inventing its gameplan in India with a clear focus on high-powered bikes. The new strategy is in keeping with the shift in customer preferences. Already, a healthy chunk of customers are moving directly to cars instead of first buying a two-wheeler. In the used car market, almost 30% customers move directly to cars while another 40% upgrade from two-wheelers.

Maruti-Suzuki India’s senior executive Ravi Bhatia said , “There is a great mismatch in the used car market. The demand simply outstrips supply. Increased incomes have changed the pyramid with cars, even the used ones, being preferred over two-wheelers” .

The overall two-wheeler market in India has shrunk to 17.42 lakh units in the April-June quarter, a fall of 9%. The anticipated slowdown is reflected in the way leading players — the Munjals of Hero group, Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors — are moving into new product lines. Bajaj Auto has started parleys with Renault while the Munjals are diversifying into three and four wheelers and Rs 15k - Rs 25k bike to hedge their business risks. India’s third largest two-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motors has already diversified into three-wheelers.

J D Power Asia Pacific’s India director Mohit Arora said, “The two-wheeler industry would be the first casualty of the Rs 1 lakh car. The performance bikes (over 150 cc) would sustain the impact, as they are an aspiration-driven market, but the commuter segment bikes (100 cc to 125 cc) would be replaced by the small car.”

The motorcycle market is witnessing a slowdown with negative growth in the past six months forcing all players to undertake remedial measures like production cuts and marketing aggression. The first quarter of the fiscal has been worst for the two-wheeler industry with a 15% dip at 13.78 lakh units.

Will Bajaj team up with Renault ?

The small car space is getting hotter and the competition is getting fiercer. Renault has made no secret of its small car plans in the recent past, and the buzz now is that the company might team up with Bajaj Auto to produce Carlos Ghosn's pet $3,000 car project.

Sources have confirmed that Bajaj MD Rajiv Bajaj will meet top Renault officials in Paris shortly to discuss a possible partnership.
The Renault twingo concept - a maybe $3000 car.

At a time when the motorcycle market is witnessing a downswing, for Bajaj Auto the timing seems to be just perfect to diversify its business and expand product portfolio.

A small car and light commercial vehicle foray with Renault will be a snug fit given the two-wheeler major's large distribution footprint and strong engineering DNA. Also with the motorcycle market witnessing a downswing (it's been negative all through the quarter and is down more than 14% in June), it makes sense to diversify the company's strong three-wheeler business to four wheelers as well.

When contacted Mr Bajaj refused to comment. Carlos Ghosn has already announced that the combine would develop a $3,000 small car using Indian expertise. The car is Renault's big pitch for global volumes after the Logan and will be positioned below it.

Renault's current partner in India is Mahindra & Mahindra with which the French company has two separate joint ventures. Mahindra Renault, a largely marketing company, is in charge of selling Renault's global low-cost sedan Logan in India.

The two partners, along with Renault's sister company Nissan, are also putting up a greenfield plant in Chennai which will be used by all three. Renault is also putting up a powertrain plant in India as a 100% subsidiary.

When contacted by Economic Times, M&M vice chairman Anand Mahindra said that he had no comments to make on whether Renault was talking to Bajaj Auto but emphatically denied there were any talks with its French partner on the small car project.

"We have had no discussions with Renault on the small car project," Mr Mahindra said.

Sources say M&M is not interested in the $3000 car project because its long-term strategy is to be a global player in the SUV market.

"The $3,000 project would not be within M&M's core competence and would not bring in the kind of margins which would make the project attractive given the size of the investment required," said a senior industry source.

Mr Ghosn has been keen on the small car project, calling Tata Motors' Rs 1 lakh car as an exciting idea on his visit to India. Last month, he announced that the Nissan-Renault combine would develop a $3000 car using India's "frugal engineering expertise". However, at that time he was quoted saying local partner M&M would be a natural ally in the project.
Honda Jazz

Bajaj Auto has, for its part, announced its foray into the light commercial vehicle market with a product that would compete with Tata Motor's successful Ace light truck. And like Tata - which has just launched Magic and Winger, two passenger vehicle versions of the Ace-Bajaj Auto is planning to crank out a passenger vehicle concept version which will be showcased at the Auto Expo next January. In an earlier interview with ET, Mr Bajaj had announced that he would be open to an alliance with a car major like Tata Motors on a small car project.

The Tata Rs 1 lakh car project has triggered off a lot of excitement both among local auto majors as well as global biggies. While Mr Ghosn has announced his future foray, others like Honda Motor Company chair-man Satoshi Aoki have said that it will not be feasible to develop a car at that price point. Maruti MD Jagdish Khattar has also seconded Mr Aoki's view.

India's booming small car market is already attracting a lot of interest. Although there are no confirmations yet, Toyota is reportedly developing a small car specifically for India and other low cost markets while Ford is likely to introduce a model on its just-launched Mazda2 platform. Honda has announced its decision to introduce the next-gen Fit/Jazz into India while Volkswagen has said it will bring in a Polo variant for its B-seg foray. GM has just launched its small car Chevy Spark earlier this year.

However, most of these hatch backs are in the premium B-seg category pitted against current models like the Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Getz and Chevy U-VA. The Rs 1 lakh car, would be positioned below the current cheapest model M800 and would help upgrade a section of India's 50 million-strong two-wheeler population to cars.

Can-Am Spyder:

The Can-Am Spyder roadster from BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) is the first 'on-road' vehicle from the company. BRP have Previously produced jetskis, sport boats, snowmobiles, ATV's, go-karts and outboard motors etc.
The Can-Am Spyder looks damn neat.

The three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder, with two wheels in the front and one wheel in the rearlooks great. The Can-Am Spyder roadster is powered by a 990cc V-Twin engine designed and manufactured by BRP-Rotax, with its unique Y-shaped design.

José Boisjoli, president and CEO, BRP said "Our Can-Am Spyder roadster is the next dimension in open-road riding. A true paradigm shift, the Spyder roadster offers a balance of performance and peace of mind with features like the Vehicle Stability System (VSS), engineered in conjunction with Bosch, which includes anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control systems."
Millenium Yellow

The Can-Am Spyder is aimed at more mature riders or "weekend warriors", those who want the thrill of open air motoring at a more intense level than a convertible car can offer, but slightly more refined than the experience found on a motorbike.
However there will probably be a lot of other people who are attracted to the Can-Am Spyder because of its unique character and head-turning design.

The BRP Can-Am Spyder roadster is built around a Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) frame, featuring a minimalist steel centre beam surrounding the engine. This construction technique minimizes the weld points for greater structural strength, and the light, slim frame offers further benefit by improving the handling and lowering the center of gravity.

Connected to the 106 horsepower 998 cc Rotax V-twin engine equipped with electronic fuel system management is a manual sequential 5-speed gearbox, complete with reverse, and designed specially for the Can-Am Spyder. Final drive is via a carbon-reinforced drive belt.

The BRP Can-Am Spyder roadster also features multiple ECU's (Electronic Control Units) which monitor a variety of functions including wheel slippage and digitally encoded security information. The vehicle also features ABS, traction control, stability control with roll-over mitigation, and a dynamic power steering system.

Full Moon Silver

Instrumentation featured on the Can-Am Spyder include; speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, trip meters, engine temperature, ambient temperature and gear position.

Initially, for 2007, the BRP Can-Am Spyder roadster is offered in a choice of two colors, Millennium Yellow of Full Moon silver.

Renault to develop small cars

French auto major Renault is looking to develop a $3,000 small car for emerging markets, including India. If the car is produced at the proposed Chennai plant, it will be sold by Renault’s Indian JV Mahindra Renault, and will be rolled out as a Mahindra Renault product.

The Chennai plant is being jointly built by Renault, Nissan and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) in a three-way joint venture. The low-cost car will take on Tata Motors’ planned Rs 1 lakh vehicle.

M&M auto division president Pawan Goenka said, “When we extended our agreement beyond the Logan to cover the new plant, it was decided that all Renault products made in Chennai will be sold as Mahindra Renault models and distributed through that JV, like the Logan.” He, however, refused to comment on whether M&M’s agreements with Renault cover the $-3,000 car as well.

The sub-Rs 1.5 lakh segment has been generating considerable interest ever since Ratan Tata announced that Tata Motors would make a Rs 1 lakh car. The company is putting up a new plant in Singur in West Bengal and is currently freezing its vendors for the project. The car is expected to roll out in 2008.

The Tata venture has already elicited interest from other auto companies. Two-wheeler maker Bajaj is producing a concept passenger four-wheeler which will be on display at the upcoming Auto Expo.

Other two-wheeler companies are also reportedly interested in similar projects. Analysts say a car in that price range will help convert two-wheeler upgrade hopefuls and dramatically increase the potential of the car market.

Mahindra Renault chairman Sylvain Bilaine, when contacted, said that “at this moment, we have no comments to make.” Renault sources say that the French company is currently closing negotiations over the Chennai plant investments and so far, there are no concrete joint product development plans with M&M. “However, discussions could be at a very early stage,” say sources.

Vendors, however, say the signs are already visible. So far, Renault has been talking about developing engines in India and sourcing locally for the project. But their choice of engine displacement is interesting. “Renault has been talking about a four-cylinder diesel engine in the 1.3-1.6 litre range which can easily be strapped on to a small car to qualify for local excise benefits,” said an auto industry source.

Renault’s search for a lower-than-Logan vehicle was articulated by its chairman on his trip to India earlier this year. On his visit to India, Renault chairman Carlos Ghosn had commented on the need to address the “unmet requirements” of consumers for a basic low-cost car.
